What are 3 words to describe your time at Ninja Van?

Dynamic, Intense and Enlightening!

Ninja Van is unlike any other workplace I have experienced in the past. In the tech team, we pride ourselves on engineering excellence, moving fast, and innovating from the ground-up. This means that engineers are involved at every step of the process, be it ideating with operations staff in the warehouse or riding along with drivers to see how they are using what be built.

We solve problems that are real in every sense of the word, and will do whatever it takes to do so.

What’s the best thing about your internship?

An awesome team. Everyone is really smart and caring, so I know that I can count on them for anything. It’s no wonder that the team I was with shipped out quality product builds so quickly. It’s one of those things that I don’t realise when I’m in it, but now that I’ve ended my internship and reflected, I realised that my team was one of the best teams I’ve came across.

Why Ninja Tech?

At Ninja, we tackle problems across multiple technical domains. We get to experience the growing pains of our technology, constantly innovating and optimising our microservices to serve our operational needs with high throughput and minimal disruptions.

We also create impactful products. For example, the driver app that our delivery staff use is instrumental to their day-to-day jobs. This can sometimes be challenging as a minute bug could cause them major inconveniences. However, it is also extremely rewarding at the same time as our code contributes to their livelihood.

What is your greatest accomplishment so far?

Everyday's different in Ninja Van.

Sometimes I'll feel like the "This is Fine" meme as I continued learning and adapting to manage ambiguity presented in different challenges within the company. These challenges aside, Ninja Van provides an open space for me to experiment on things that contributed to my personal and career growth.

I think one of my greatest accomplishments so far as a design leader is being able to lend a hand in building the Product Design team - driving scalable designer hiring materials that aided the team's hiring processes. I was also able to contribute to the launching of one of Ninja Van's initiatives, NinjaChat, which introduced me to a whole new space of conversational design and chatbot flows.

What makes Ninja Van a great place to work at?

The people at Ninja Van are what make it the best place to work at. Everyone was so friendly and ready to help whenever I needed it, even if we're not in the same team. The work culture was such that I felt very comfortable talking to people in higher positions and made me feel very welcome. And looking at interactions between other employees, I could tell that to them, Ninja Van was like family.

Describe a typical day at Ninja Van

There's no such thing as a “typical day”! Because of the nature of our job, everyday is really quite different. It could be discovery work (doing user research, mapping out user flows), scoping out upcoming builds, preparing for product releases, or following up on the roll-out of a deployed build (pushing for adoption, tracking our metrics to see if our build has brought about impact to the business).

It’s humbling and fulfilling that a lot of companies don’t take fresh grad as a PM, so i’m super thankful for the opportunity in Ninja! I also get to learn from a lot of people who are more experienced than i am, and everyone is very willing to guide me along. What’s most fulfilling is knowing we solved a pain point and built something that is useful for our users and the business.
